For a very long time, HIV infection was considered a disease of homosexuals. This was facilitated by the fact that for the first time this disease was diagnosed in the representatives of sexual minorities. Today, the myth that only homosexuals can be infected with HIV is dispelled. Absolutely everyone is at risk of contracting HIV infection: pensioners, schoolchildren, bankers, politicians and plumbers – but only those who do not follow the rules of prevention, lead a promiscuous sexual life, use injecting drugs, engage in unprotected sex . Nevertheless, homosexuals remain one of the risk groups.
This is confirmed by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). As a result of the research conducted by this Program, HIV among homosexuals and bisexuals is much more prevalent than among heterosexual people. From a biological point of view, this is due to the fact that when copulating through the anus, the receiving side receives damage to the mucous membranes, as a result of which the human immunodeficiency virus enters the body much easier. However, studies suggest that anal sex, with respect to HIV, is equally dangerous for both receiving men and women. But in heterosexual couples, copulation through the anus is much less popular than in homosexual and bisexual couples. As a result, homosexuals who practice anal sex are at greatest risk. In addition, often, it is among homosexuals that promiscuous sexual contacts are widespread, which undoubtedly significantly increases the risk of HIV infection. The reasons for this sexual behavior are seen by many specialists in the absence of a culture of relations between homosexual couples, and the rejection of such couples by society plays an important role. In addition, a negative attitude towards homosexuals often leads to the fact that this group of people is not sufficiently informed about methods of HIV prevention. And this already leads to the fact that homosexuals neglect the use of condoms.
Nevertheless, there is an increasing awareness of the importance of preventive work with men who have sex with men. So on the international platform this issue is given more and more attention – in early 2016 in Geneva there was an installation conference of a new advisory body, whose activities will be aimed at preventing and preventing the spread of HIV among homosexuals. The name of this body is the Global Platform for Accelerating the Response to the HIV Epidemic among gay men and other men who have sex with men. One of the initiators of this body was UNAIDS. At the first meeting of the Global Platform, it was noted that today in all regions of the world the number of HIV–positive people is increasing precisely among homosexuals. The reason is that this population does not directly participate in the development of HIV response strategies at various levels. Experts are sure that the creation of the Global Platform will be an excellent help in combating the spread of HIV infection not only among these groups of the population, but in general.
Today we can say with certainty that problems with HIV prevention certainly exist, however, a lot of work is done, which will result in a significant reduction in HIV–positive.
